Cathgate Miners Banner Mosaic

Catchgate Miners Banner Mosaic. One mosaic refers to Catchgate’s industrial past and the other to the present and the future. One mosaic shows the strength of a community based on collective hard work and togetherness the other shows how today the young people of Catchgate are empowered by information, knowledge and choice. 

Materials – Galvanised and painted steel, porcelain mosaic tiles and epoxy grout. 4m x 2m x 1cm. The pick and shovel show symbolise hard physical labour, energy and power won by sweat and toil, (old technology). 

The computer screen, image of the world, wave, computer mouse, and boxing gloves symbolise freedom of information, choice, new technology (surfing the world wide web). The world seems a much smaller place now than it did 200 years ago, travel and communication is almost instant now.
