Playground Sculptures
Material Guide
Playground Sculptures products are manufactured from a variety of externally durable materials. These materials are described using generic industry terms that require some explanation and this is as follows:
Cast Stone - In the UK and Europe cast stone is defined as "any material manufactured with aggregate and cementitious binder, intended to resemble in appearance, and which may be used in a similar way to, natural stone".Variations in shade, occasional air holes and weather marks sometimes occur do to the natural materials used in the manufacturing process. Effervescence is caused by salts in the cement and may occasionally occur within cast stone products.
Cast Iron – Iron that has been cast into the shape of the artwork or sculpture. Playground Sculptures cast iron artworks are left to rust as this often suits the particular artwork and this should not have a detrimental effect on the product. If the product is delivered without rust it will develop a rust finish if left outside for a few weeks.
Bronze, Copper, Brass and Stainless Steel are other durable non ferrous metals often used to create sculpture and can be cast or fabricated and patinated to achieve different finished and colours. These materials can be left to weather naturally or the desired finish can be protected by yearly coats of wax or clear varnish such as Incralac.
Galvanised Steel – Mild Steel that has been hot dipped in molten zinc to provide long lasting protection against rusting caused by the weather.
Galvanised Steel and Aluminium – Galvanised Steel structure with cast aluminium parts bolted or welded to the steelwork.
Galvanised Steel with ‘T-Wash’ finish – Mild Steel that has been hot dipped in molten zinc to provide long lasting protection against rusting caused by the weather. ‘T-Wash’ acid etch is applied over the galvanised steel creating a variegated grey powdery finish similar to the look of aged lead. This finish changes with the effects of the weather more than bare galvanised steel.
Resin Bronze/Cold Cast Bronze – Real bronze powder suspended in polyester or polyurethane resin. The bronze is exposed and burnished to resemble cast bronze once the resin has cured.
Resin Bronze Concrete – As above but sprayed or applied onto cast concrete as a coating and burnished and patinated to resemble cast bronze.
Steel and Mosaic – Galvanised Steel artwork with sections where externally durable porcelain mosaic tiles are applied within a steel frame with epoxy grout for durability.
Coloured Resin - Polyester or polyurethane resin filled with fillers such as fillite, talc or microdol and coloured with resin pigments.
Concrete – aggregates and cement mixed together to form a stone like material.
Patina – a type of acid that chemically alters the bronze or metal surface and the metal powders in resin bronze. Often use to darken or antique bronze sculptures.
Plaster – water based gypsum derived material of varying strengths.
Cleaning Playground Sculptures Products.
Cast Stone
Warm water with a small amount of washing up liquid should be enough to removed bird dropping and some other marks. Please use a soft brush or soft sponge to remove dirt. Rinse immediately with clean water. Patio and drive cleaners, Jet washing and hard scrubbing will expose the aggregates and if used any damage to the product will not be the responsibility of Playground Sculptures
Please Note: Playground Sculptures material defects warranty will be invalid if de-icing products or other strong chemicals are used on our cast stone products.
Galvanised Steel and Aluminium, Bronze, Copper, Brass and Stainless Steel
Warm water with a small amount of washing up liquid should be enough to remove bird dropping and some other marks. Please use a soft brush or soft sponge to remove dirt. Rinse immediately with clean water.
Graffiti and other difficult marks can be removed with most anti graffiti removers. Use as directed and rinse immediately with clean water.
If wax or varnish coatings have been applied these may be damaged by some graffiti removers. Please carry out a small discrete test to determine if the graffiti remover is safe to use.
A fresh coat of clear wax will also provide a barrier to new dirt and grime and it will restore the natural beauty of resin bronze products while making it easier to remove dirt and grime in the future.

Stubborn marks and graffiti can be removed with wire brushes, sandpaper and anti-graffiti removers, jet wash and other types of cleaning agents. After application rinse immediately with clean water. Re-apply water until rust redevelops over exposed metal surface. This should not take more than a week or two.
